On Wednesday the snowfall in central Germany will increase again. In the morning the sun is still shining from Cologne to Nuremberg and Dresden. In the south, the rain will increase significantly over the course of the day and the snowfall will shift slightly to the north. It will rain south of the Main, snow further north.

Storm over Germany: Up to 20 centimeters of snow possible

By the evening, the rain will advance in the west to Cologne and Kassel, and there will also be sleet in the east. Even in Hanover and Berlin it can still snow on Wednesday evening. Usually between 2 and 10 centimeters of fresh snow falls on Wednesday. In traffic jams, especially above 600 meters, there can also be up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow. Heavy snow showers can occur on the North Sea coast, extending far inland. This can also lead to traffic obstructions due to snow or restricted visibility.

In Franconia, the thaw started on Wednesday. In the northern low mountain ranges and in the east, on the other hand, it remains white for the time being.

Large temperature differences ignite various storms

During the night, the rain and snowfall will shift south again. This means that we can expect both snow and freezing wet conditions on the roads on Thursday morning. Until Thursday morning, the boundary between snowfall and rain lies roughly on the line from Cologne to Dresden.

Basically, there is a large temperature difference between northern and southern Germany. That’s why there are different storms in the south than in the north or the middle.

Especially in the Black Forest, the Palatinate Forest, Odenwald, Spessart and Steigerwald, continuous rain can already occur on Wednesday. Rainfall can reach up to 30 liters per square meter.

Storm gusts down to the lowlands!

Strong wind intensification occurs between the cold air in the north and the Alps. On Wednesday there will be widespread gusts of wind up to 80 km/h in the lowlands in the south. Hurricane gusts of up to 120 km/h can also occur over the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. Hurricane gusts also occur at higher altitudes in the Alps. The storm winds in the south continue on Thursday night.
