Shopping doesn’t always have to be a must, it can also be a lot of fun. Fresh fruit and vegetables, juicy meat, crusty bread and other products are waiting on the shelves. Four supermarkets in Germany stand out in particular, they are among the “Best Supermarkets in Germany”.
Supermarkets are no longer just simple places to shop, but offer the customer a comprehensive experience. Every year, outstanding store concepts are awarded the coveted title of “Supermarket of the Year”. Four supermarkets were convincing this year.
A jury of experts from the trade journal “Lebensmittel Praxis” and the Burda publishing house award the coveted prize every year. Four branches were awarded in the categories chain stores with a sales area of up to 2,000 sqm and sales area of more than 2,000 sqm as well as independent supermarkets in both branch sizes. Rewe and Edeka were particularly convincing.
The four “Best Supermarkets in Germany”
The branches were able to convince the jury and the entire industry with a well thought-out product range, the pleasant shopping atmosphere, spacious sales areas and the very good customer service. The winners are chosen in four categories each year.
- Chain stores with a sales area of up to 2,000 square meters : Rewe, Schleissheimer Strasse 137, 80797 Munich
- Chain stores over 2,000 square meters of retail space : Rewe Ackerhalle, Ackerstrasse 23 / Invalidenstrasse 158, 10115 Berlin
- Independently managed branches with a sales area of up to 2,000 square meters : Edeka Prechtl, Nussdorfer Strasse 35, 83098 Brannenburg
- Independently run branches with a sales area of more than 2,000 square meters : E-Center Angerbogen, Düsseldorfer Landstrasse 361, 47259 Duisburg.
Rewe supermarket with a vegan counter
The Rewe branch in the Ackerhalle, the winner in the “Stores over 2,000 square meters” category, offers customers a unique shopping experience in a special atmosphere. The market, which was remodeled and modernized in late 2016, is centrally located on Invalidenstrasse and attracts residents, students, tourists and professionals from the neighborhood.
The supermarket, managed by Susanne Klars, employs 56 people and serves up to 30,000 customers a week. With a selection of over 23,000 items, the supermarket offers a diverse range of products. In addition to a large fruit and vegetable department, there is also a wide selection of convenience products for immediate consumption and a sushi bar. The service counters tempt you with a variety of sausage, meat, cheese and fish specialties. Since 2022 there has also been a vegan service counter. The Ackerhalle was built in 1888 and is one of 14 municipal market halls. It is the only one where the outer facade has been preserved in its original condition.
Rewe supermarket: neighborhood help for seniors
Davor Vrdoljak, the store manager of the REWE store on Schleißheimer Strasse in Munich, is very pleased with the title of “Best branch up to 2,000 square meters”. What was particularly outstanding for the jury was that the 46-strong market team is always up to date with regard to food and nutrition trends. They are integrated into the range at an early stage and presented widely. The range includes almost 24,700 products. Customers will find organic products, regional specialities, vegan food, sushi and convenience products.
A notable feature is also the neighborhood help for the elderly, which is part of the supermarket’s extensive social commitment in the neighborhood. The team is actively involved in supporting the elderly in the neighborhood.
Edeka supermarket garden style car park
EDEKA Prechtl from Brannenburg was chosen as the winner in the “Self-employed up to 2,000 square meters” category. The market was renovated in 2021 and offers customers a pleasant shopping atmosphere. The car park is attractively designed and gives the impression of a garden. The market itself features high ceilings, natural daylight, and prominent signage to help with orientation.
The team consists of 56 friendly and competent employees who not only support customers with questions about the extensive range of over 25,000 items, but also at the service counters and in the fruit and vegetable department. Here, customers can choose from a wide selection of fresh products.
Edeka supermarket has a nutritionist advise on the snack shelf
The winner in the category “self-employed over 2,000 square meters” is the E-Center Angerbogen in Duisburg. The Tonscheidt merchant family won over the jury with their focus on conscious Nourishment convinced. In the supermarket, customers will find a variety of vegan, gluten-free, organic and fitness products. The team consists of four chefs and a dietitian, who advise customers and offer healthy convenience meals.
Particular attention is paid to the selection of regional products in the fruit and vegetable department. These come from surrounding farms and help to promote regional agriculture. Customers appreciate the freshness and quality of these regional products.
An absolute attraction for customers is the campaign stand, where various specialties such as Böreks, donuts and other delicacies are freshly prepared in front of the customers. This not only ensures a special shopping atmosphere, but also enables customers to be inspired by the culinary delights.
