On Monday (May 1st), one of the biggest and most prestigious fashion events of the year will take place in New York City: the Met Gala! Hundreds of invited celebrities then walk the famous red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in unusual outfits. In 2023 the museum honors the works of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019). Everything we know so far about the guest list, the theme, and more:
What is the theme of the 2023 Met Gala?
Following “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”, this year’s Met Gala honors fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. The motto is: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. The accompanying exhibition at the Met Museum is intended to honor the life and work of Lagerfeld in a “unique way”.
How stars and designers will interpret the topic will of course only become clear on May 1st. It is likely, however, that the majority of the guests could choose vintage pieces from the big fashion houses for which Lagerfeld worked: Chloé, Chanel, Fendi, Jean Patou or Pierre Balmain.
Who is invited to the Met Gala?
The event is organized by the US “Vogue” under the patronage of editor-in-chief Anna Wintour (73). She also decides on the guest list: Every year, celebrities are invited who are considered socially relevant in various professional fields such as fashion, film, television, theater, music, business, sports, social media and politics.
Who exactly is on this coveted guest list will not be published. However, it is already known which stars will be co-patrons of the evening alongside Anna Wintour and will definitely walk the red carpet: pop singer Dua Lipa (27), poet Michaela Coel (35), actress Penélope Cruz (49) and Tennis star Roger Federer (41).
In addition, it was already known in advance that Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette should have received an invitation. It is not known whether the 12-year-old animal will actually walk the red carpet at the Met on Monday. Despite reports to the contrary, Kim Kardashian (42) was apparently happy about an invitation to the Met Gala. She recently posted several photos with the kitten on Instagram and wrote, “Did on a date with Choupette in Paris. Spent some time in Karl Lagerfeld’s office to get some inspiration for the Met Gala.”
The latest issue of US “Vogue” suggests other possible invited guests. The magazine pays tribute to Karl Lagerfeld with a cover featuring the ten models the designer has enjoyed working with the most: Anok Yai (25), Shalom Harlow (49), Kendall Jenner (27), Liu Wen (35), Adut Akech (23), Natalia Vodianova (41), Naomi Campbell (52), Amber Valletta (49), Gigi Hadid (28) and Devon Aoki (40).
Where can you watch the Met Gala live?
“Vogue” will broadcast a live stream from the red carpet on May 1st. Broadcasting begins at 6:30 p.m. (EST, in Germany: May 2, 12:30 a.m.) on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The live stream will be moderated by La La Anthony, 40, Derek Blasberg, 41, Chloe Fineman, 34, and Emma Chamberlain, 21.
